Today is Mickey Mouse’s 75th Anniversary. We found that bit out back in the Netherlands already, so we pre-planned a trip to the Magic Kingdom for today. Such an event one would not want to miss!Vandaag is het de ‘75th anniversary’ van Mickey Mouse. Hier waren we in Nederland al achter gekomen dus we hadden al een tripje Magic Kingdom geplanned voor vandaag. Dit wil je natuurlijk niet missen!
What we did not know however, is that today they would be unveiling 75 Mickey statues. After doing some inquiries we found out that this too would be happening in the Magic Kingdom, so that was great.Wat we echter niet wisten, was dat er 75 Mickey beelden werden onthuld vandaag. Na wat navraag te hebben gedaan kwamen we er achter dat dit ook in het Magic Kingdom zou gaan gebeuren, dus dat kwam heel goed uit.

We again got ourselves a quick and easy breakfast in the hotel shop and then hit the road to the Magic Kingdom.We hebben weer een vlug en simpel ontbijtje gepakt in het winkeltje van het hotel en zijn op weg gegaan naar het Magic Kingdom.
When you entered the Magic Kingdom, the statues were all in front of Main Street Station. Hard to miss. They were all covered with long red cloths.Als je binnenkont in het Magic Kingdom stonden de beelden gelijk voor Mainstreet U.S.A. station. Kon bijna niet missen. Ze waren allemaal afgedekt met grote rode doeken.
Miriam quickly wanted to take a picture from the side while everything was still veiled. Was there a BITCH cast member (Sorry, no other words apply!) that wanted to force us on. We were not allowed to stand there. So Miriam told her: I ONLY make a picture! On which she retorted even bitchier that we had to move on. She did not yet quite teat the camera from Miriam’s hands. Not that she should have tried, because then she would really have gotten the rough side of Miriam’s tongue. Miriam immediately responded that there was no need to be snibby. At which I involved myself and remarked that with that attitude she was not in her place as cast member at Disney. There cast members are friendly. I also reminded her, with emphasis, that the Magic Kingdom is supposed to be ‘The Happiest Place on Earth’ and not ‘the Grumpiest’.Ik wilde vanaf de zijkant een snelle foto maken toen alles nog afgedekt was. Stond er zo’n BITCH van een castmember (sorry ander woord heb ik niet voor haar!) die mij verplichtte om door te lopen. Ik mocht daar dus niet even stilstaan. Dus ik zei haar: I ONLY make a picture! Waarop ze nog kattiger zei dat ik door moest lopen. Ze trok nog net die camera niet uit mijn handen. Hoefde ze ook niet te proberen, dan had ze echt ruzie. Ik zei ook dat ze niet gelijk zo kattig hoefde te doen. Waarop Cesco zich er ook even tegenaan bemoeide en opmerkte dat ze als castmember helemaal niet thuis hoorde in Disney. Daar zijn de castmembers namelijk vriendelijk. Ook herinnerde hij haar, met enig volume, er aan dat het Magic Kingdom ‘The Happiest Place on Earth’ is en niet ‘the Grumpiest’.
A little bit further, even more aside, there was an itsy bitsy area roped off, where some 30 people could stand. On the opposite side of the statues was another such area. The rest of the ‘guests’ were honestly expected to keep moving. I’ll ask you: 2x 30 people can watch and the rest has to move on!Een klein stukje verder, nog meer aan de zijkant, was een super klein gebied afgezet waar zo’n 30 mensen konden staan. Aan de andere kant van de beelden was ook zo’n gebied. Van de rest van de mensen werd eigenlijk verwacht dat ze doorliepen. Ik vraag het je, 2x 30 mensen mogen kijken de rest moet weg!

We, in ‘our’ little area, we all wondering out loud whether Disney management still realized that the success of the parks, and to an even bigger extend Mickey’s success, indeed is due to the many visitors and aficionado’s who spend their money at Disney. And then you’re tucked away somewhere at the side.We vroegen ons in ‘ons’ gebied met zijn allen ook hardop af of het management van Disney zich eigenlijk nog wel realiseerde dat het succes van de parken, en niet te vergeten het succes van Mickey wel aan de vele bezoekers en geinteresseerden te danken is. En dan wordt je aan een zijkant een beetje weg gestopt.
We had to wait for about an hour and during that wait we had quite some fun. In our area there was a wise guy that kept spouting lovely corny jokes and word plays, which made waiting much more pleasurable.We moesten ongeveer een uurtje wachten en we hebben tijdens het wachten best veel lol gehad. In ons gebied stond zo’n lolbroek die van die heerlijke flauwe geintjes en woordspelingen had, wat het wachten een stuk aangenamer heeft gemaakt!
The wind did not want to cooperate in this all (our ‘friend’ said that it was Walt’s way of telling everybody to get on with the show) and the veils, which were over the statues, kept being blown up. That way we were treated to Sneak Previews shortly before the statues would be unveiled! The youngsters that were there to assist in the unveiling of the statues were now deployed on several strategic locations, to sit on the veils. (“What did you do that day?” “I was a paperweight”)De wind wilde niet echt meewerken aan dit hele gebeuren (onze ‘vriend’ zei nog dat dat Walt’s manier was om te zeggen dat ze op moesten schieten) en steeds waaide het doek, wat over de beelden zat, omhoog. Zo kregen we zo nu en dan een Sneek Preview nog voordat de beelden onthult waren! De kinderen die later moesten gaan helpen met het onthullen van deze beelden werden op diversen punten neergezet om op de doeken te gaan zitten. (“What did you do that day?” “I was a paperweight”)

Shortly after 10 AM the unveiling ceremony began. First some unknown entity came to entertain us and warm us up for the event. Then the ‘voice’ of Kim Possible (the cartoon series) came to stage to sing the Mickey Mouse March. And then it was Minnie Mouse’s turn. This was her surprise for Mickey, because he had been entertaining people for so long!Even na tienen begon de onthulling. Eerst kwam er iemand ons bezig houden en een beetje opwarmen. Degene die de stem van Kim Possible doet (tekenfilm serie) kwam de Mickey Mouse March zingen. Toen was het de beurt aan Minnie Mouse. Dit was haar verrassing aan Mickey omdat hij al zolang in het vak zit!
The train arrived at Main Street Station with loads of Disney Characters. And then Mickey was led in, blindfolded, by Goofy, Donald and Pluto, along those statues to the stage. That was really funny to see. Then Michael Eisner (CEO of Disney) started a (for the wind //too//) long speech. And after that it was finally time to unveil the statues. 75 statues of Mickey. They are all inspired by celebrities and artists. It was a truly colorful display, all those statues together.De trein met allemaal Disney Characters kwam Main Street binnen. Mickey werd geblindoekt door Goofy, Donald en Pluto langs de beelden geleid. Dat was echt heel erg grappig. Michael Eisner (directeur van Disney) hield een (voor de wind té) lange speech. En toen was het tijd om de beelden te onthullen. 75 beelden van Mickey. Ze zijn allemaal bewerkt door artiesten en kunstenaars. Het was een heel kleurrijk gezicht om zo al die beelden bij elkaar te zien.

It was party in town (eh park). You’ll seldom see so many Disney Characters in one spot. Even Scrooge McDuck, a character that is very illusive, was there!Het was feest in het park. Zelden zal je zoveel Disney Characters op een plek zien. Zelfs Oom Dagobert, een figuur die echt vrijwel nooit te zien is, was aanwezig!
As far as merchandise goes, there is strikingly little stuff to find for Mickey’s 75th Anniversary. According to the Cast Members it is because Disney does not want to cultivate an image of Mickey as a really old mouse.Er is qua merchandise opvallend weinig te vinden over het 75 jarige jubileum van Mickey. Naar zeggen van de Cast Members is dat gedaan omdat ze Mickey niet het imago van een oud iemand mee willen geven.
But there is also nothing to be found about the exhibition (75 InspEARations) that started with the unveiling of these statues. The idea is that these statues will be on display in the Magic Kingdom until April and then they’ll tour the USA. Around this time next year they’ll reach their temporary ‘final’ destination in Disneyland in Anaheim (Los Angeles). After which they will all be auctioned off and the proceedings of each statue will be to the benefit of a cause determined by the celebrity/artist that did the statue.Maar ook is er niets te vinden van de tentoonstelling (75 InspEARations) die met het onthullen van deze beelden gestart is. De bedoeling is dat deze beelden tot april te zien zijn in Magic Kingdom en dan gaan ze toeren door Amerika heen. Om volgend jaar deze tijd hun voorlopige bestemming in Disneyland Los Angeles te krijgen. Uiteindelijk is het de bedoeling dat deze beelden geveild worden en de opbrengst naar het doel gaat wat de artiest/kunstenaar voor ogen heeft.

While we visiting Magic Kingdom we graced Tomorrowland with our presence. You see, we had not yet made it there. First we went to TimeKeeper. Especially for me, as Miriam thinks the show is a total bore. It is a 360-degree movie. You have to keep standing and there are tons of corny jokes.We hebben met dit Magic Kingdom bezoekje gelijk Tomorrowland bezocht. Zover waren we namelijk nog niet gekomen. We zijn eerst naar TimeKeeper geweest. Speciaal voor Cesco, ik zelf vind dit een oervervelende attractie. Het is een film die helemaal rondom loopt. Je moet er bij blijven staan en er worden allemaal van die vreselijk flauwe grapjes gemaakt.
Then we went to Space Mountain. This does not compare in any way with Space Mountain in Paris. This Space Mountain is a somewhat tame rollercoaster in the dark, without any serious inversions or loops!Daarna zijn we in Space Mountain geweest. Dit is absoluut niet te vergelijken met Space Mountain in Parijs. Deze Space Mountain is een wat flauwe achtbaan in het donker en hij gaat ook niet eens over de kop!

Carousel of Progress is one of the eldest attractions in the Magic Kingdom. They show you a glimpse of the changes in the American homes over time thanks to modern technology. And after every scene you rotate (hence Carousel) to the next segment. If was quite amusing. Outside of the peak season this attraction is closed most of the time. So when it is open, you should really seize the opportunity!Carousel of Progress is een van de oudste attracties van het Magic Kingdom. Er wordt een blik geworpen over hoe tijden veranderd zijn met moderne technologie. En iedere keer (vandaar carousel) draai je weer een segment verder. Dat was best grappig. Het schijnt zo te zijn dat deze attractie niet vaak geopend is. Dus als die open is, moet je er gebruik van maken!

We then walked back to the statues, where they were still very busy cleaning up. It doesn’t look like we’ll have a chance to walk along the statues before the end of today, to have a good look at them. The location isn’t one of the best, to be honest! I purchased a special Limited Edition (2500 made) pin commemorating the opening of the tour. Besides that there was virtually no merchandise to be found. Too bad! Allegedly there is a T-shirt, which depict Mickey in a rockstar style, with the tourdates on the back. But nothing to be found.We zijn terug gelopen naar de beelden, waar men druk bezig was met de boel op te ruimen. Het ziet er niet naar uit dat je vandaag voor de beelden langs kan lopen om ze te bekijken. De lokatie is eigenlijk niet al te slim gekozen!! Cesco heeft een speciale pin van de opening van de tentoonstelling (oplage van 2500) gekocht. Verder is er echt vrijwel niets te vinden. Jammer! Er schijnt dus een een t-shirt te zijn waarop Mickey als rockstar staat afgebeeld met op de achterkant de datums van de tour. Maar er is echt niets te vinden.

Geordi’s Mousketeer hat (Mickey ears!) still bothered Miriam. In her eyes it doesn’t sat Geordi but Jeordi. Americans write their capital G completely different than we do. Miriam was of the opinion that we at least should go and ask whether they could embroider our style G. So we returned to the store. A very nice lady assisted us. It truly would not be a problem to embroider his name with our G. Just as long as we would write down on a piece of paper what //our// G exactly looks like. And honestly, now Geordi too has a beautifully embroidered had. The lady also told us that we were welcome to return the other hat. They would simply refund us the money. Talk about customer service! So we’ll probably be heading back again later this week…Het Mousketeer petje (Mickey oren!) van Geordi zat me eigenlijk nog steeds dwars. In mijn ogen staat er gewoon geen Geordi maar Jeordi. De Amerikanen schrijven de G zo anders dan wij gewent zijn. Ik vond gewoon dat we op zijn minst nog moesten vragen of ze onze G konden borduren. Dus wij naar het winkeltje toe. Een hele vriendelijke dame hielp ons. Het was echt geen probleem om zijn naam te borduren met onze G. We moesten wel even op en briefje tekenen hoe onze G eruit precies uit ziet. En echt, nu heeft óók Geordi een mooi geborduurde pet. De dame zei ons ook dat we gerust terug mogen komen met die andere pet. Kregen we gewoon ons geld terug. Dat vond ik nog eens lief! Dus waarschijnlijk van de week nog eens terug gaan…

We quickly ate at Pinocchio’s and then took a ride (or is that flight?) on Aladdin’s flying carpets.We hebben nog wat gegeten bij Pinocchio en zijn daarna een ritje gaan maken op het vliegende tapijt van Aladdin.

Neither one of us felt like staying in the park the whole day. We chose to simply get back to the hotel. And there we investigated what else we could do today.Geen van beiden hadden eigenlijk veel zin om de hele dag nu in het park te blijven. We kozen ervoor om terug te gaan naar het hotel. Om daar uit te zoeken wat we nog meer kunnen doen vandaag.

That ‘else’ turned out to be shopping. There is a pretty nice mall just past Orlando. In that same area there was a Michael’s (Crafts and Hobby). So of course we stopped there too. It still is unbelievable how much art and craft materials you can buy here. Miriam was in doubt whether she would purchase a book with patterns for Winnie the Pooh applications. But the price was quite hefty ($ 20) and Miriam was in doubt whether she would actually use it back home. So she put it back. Materials, such as felt, are much cheaper here too: 20 cts. per sheet. But to start stockpiling like a madman!Dat werd dus een beetje winkelen. Er zit een redelijke shoppingmall even voorbij Orlando. Ook zat daar in de buurt een Michaels (hobbyspullen). Dus daar zijn we ook nog even geweest. Het blijft gewoon ongelooflijk hoeveel hobbyspullen je hier kopen kunt. Even nog overwogen om een boekje te kopen met daarin patronen om Winnie The Pooh applicaties te maken. Maar het was best een prijzig boek ($20,-) en ik twijfelde of ik dit wel zou gaan gebruiken. Dus heb het laten liggen. Dingen zoals vilt zijn hier ook stukken voordeliger: 20 ct per vel. Maar om nu gelijk als een idioot in te gaan slaan!

After the shopping we drove back towards our hotel. At the Golden Corral restaurant we first made a pit-stop for dinner. The food there is very good and there is lots to choose from! Miriam thinks the Banana Cream pie is irresistible!!Na het shoppen zijn we weer terug gereden richting hotel. Bij het Golden Corral restaurant zijn we gestopt om een hapje te eten. Het eten hier is zo ontzettend lekker en gevarieerd. Vooral de banana cream pie is onweerstaanbaar!!

After a scrumptious meal we quickly dropped in to our hotel room, to immediately go out to DownTown Disney. First a stop at the Scrapbook shop. It is thé rage in the USA now. Scrapbooking in summary means sticking your pictures and memorabilia in to albums in a nice way. Pretty much the way Miriam has, with help of flyers and such, been doing it for years (and before we knew it is called scrapbooking)! Miriam could not find what she was looking for, so bad luck for her.Na heerlijk gesmuld te hebben zijn we nog even op onze hotelkamer geweest om daarna gelijk door te gaan naar DownTown Disney. Eerst even bij het Scrapbook winkeltje kijken. Dat is hier een ongelooflijke rage. Scrapbooking houd in dat je je foto’s op een gezellige manier inplakt. Iets wat ik eigenlijk, met behulp van foldertjes en dergelijke, al jaren doe! Ik kan hetgeen ik zocht niet echt vinden dus ik heb gewoon pech.

Of course we also visited the pin shop to have a look at the traders there. There was an exceptionally nice lady. She’s a cast member, and we started talking together. At the end Miriam got a 32nd WDW Anniversary button, and I was able to trade a very special pin with her. I now have a Mickey’s 75th Anniversary Cast Member exclusive pin. Not a limited edition pin, but just as special! She asked me whether I was sure I wanted to trade it for my Dalmatian Autumn Leaves pin. Because that is a limited edition of 1000! Well, I was absolutely sure, and Miriam agrees with me! She too was very happy with her new pin.Natuurlijk zijn we nog even naar het pin shopje geweest om bij de traders te kijken. Er was een hele vriendelijke dame. Zij is castmember en we raakten aan de praat. Ik kreeg van haar een broche van het 32 jarige bestaan van Disney World en Cesco heeft een hele speciale pin weten te ruilen. Hij heeft nu een Castmember pin van het 75 jarige jubileum van Mickey. Geen limited edition, maar net zo bijzonder! Ze vroeg aan Cesco of hij wel zeker wist dat hij zijn Dalmatier-pin ervoor wilde ruilen. Dat is namelijk een limited edition! Nou Cesco wist het echt zeker, en ik geef hem nog gelijk ook! Ze was heel erg blij met haar pin.

We also went to the World of Disney. We had read that they would have merchandise related to the Celebrate Mickey, 75 InspEARations tour. We saw this on the Internet station in Pin Traders. But no such luck! They had absolutely nothing. Too bad!We zijn nog even naar de World of Disney gegaan. We hadden gelezen dat er hier dingen te koop waren omtrent Celebrate Mickey 75 InspEARations (de tentoonstelling van de beelden). Dit hadden we gelezen op internet. Maar niks hoor! Er was helemaal niets. Jammer.
Miriam however FINALLY found a nice toy car for Geordi. Ever since the start of the vacation she’s been searching for a toy car with a pull-back motor. She couldn’t find any. And now she could choose from 2: a racecar and a fire engine with Mickey inside. That one immediately disappeared in to her shopping basket! Also took some stickers to later be able to decorate the photo-book. So she has got her job cut out for her when she’s back.Wel vond ik EINDELIJK een leuk autootje voor Geordi. Ik ben al de hele vakantie aan het kijken voor een auto die je terugtrekt en daarna loslaat zodat de auto vooruit kan rijden. Ik kon het nergens vinden. En nu had ik keuze uit 2: een race-auto en een brandweerauto met Mickey erin. Die ging natuurlijk gelijk in mijn mandje! Ook nog stickers meegnomen om straks het fotoboek mee te kunnen versieren. Dus er staat me na de vakantie weer een klusje te wachten.

We though it sufficient for the day and returned to our room. The days fly by. Miriam does not have any trouble with the return on Saturday, but I still have a sense of lacking. It would be great to be able to hug the kids again. Miriam even starts to miss Samantha’s uninterruptible chatter!We vonden het wel weer welletjes geweest voor vandaag en zijn terug gegaan naar het hotel. De dagen vliegen om. Maar ik heb geen moeite om Zaterdag weer naar huis te gaan. Heerlijk weer de kinderen kunnen knuffelen. Ik begin zelfs Samantha’s vele gekwebbel te missen!
