11/11/2003: "Tuesday, 11 November 2003Dinsdag 11 November 2003"
This morning Miriam rose half an hour early to make a good start at her report. She shares my laptop with me and I need time to be able to translate and post it to the net.Vanmorgen een halfuurtje eerder opgestaan om een goed begin aan mijn verslag te kunnen maken. Ik deel de laptop samen met Cesco en hij wil ook graag wat tijd krijgen om de boel te kunnen vertalen en op het net te zetten.
For today the plans are to go on a nice shopping tour. There is supposed to be a large crafts and DIY store (Michaels) in the neighborhood. It is close to the Belz factory outlet, where we've been before. Miriam's watch, which we just bought, is broken. So we'll have to go there to exchange or return it. Besides that we are also planning on going to the Florida Mall.Voor vandaag hebben we plannen om eens lekker te gaan winkelen. Er schijnt hier In de buurt een super grote hobbywinkel te zitten (Micheals). Deze ligt vlakbij de Factory Outlet Belz, waar we al eerder geweest zijn. Mijn horloge, die ik net gekocht hebt, is stuk. Dus we moeten daarnaar toe terug om hem om te kunnen ruilen. Ook hebben we plannen om naar de Florida Mall te gaan.
Of course we first had a delicious breakfast in the hotel restaurant. The food is really good. You could really eat until you burst! But we try to limit our intake. Miriam will miss the custom made omelets once she's back home! Nancy was there again, and you can really tell that we hold a special place now...
After breakfast we bought ourselves a souvenir mug. The main thing: it includes unlimited refills of most beverages (alcohol and espresso machine excluded). Which is great, as we aren't alcohol or coffee drinkers to begin with. But you could also take your mug with you when dining in one of the hotel restaurants (excluding breakfast). So that's a winner. According to Nancy it was really something for us, and it would be stupid not to so it. We are staying longer than the average guest. So we now have a Mug!Natuurlijk eerst even heerlijk ontbeten in het restaurant van het hotel. Man wat kun je hier toch lekker eten. Je kunt je echt letterlijk klem vreten als je dat zou willen! Maar we houden het toch vrij normaal. Ik ga straks, terug in Nederland, die heerlijke omelets missen hoor! Nancy was er ook weer vandaag en we merken heel goed dat we een streepje voor hebben…
Na het ontbijt hebben we een souvenir mug gekocht. Dat houd het volgende in: Je koopt een mok en deze mag je zo vaak vullen met niet alcolische dranken als je maar wilt. (De Espresso machine is ook uitgesloten) Komt goed uit, wij zijn helemaal niet van die alcohol en koffie drinkers. Maar je kunt je mok ook mee nemen als je bijvoorbeeld (ontbijt uitgezonderd) dineert in een van de hotelrestaurants. Dus dat zit wel snor. Volgens Nancy was dat echt iets voor ons en waren we dom als we het niet deden. We zitten hier langer dan de gemiddelde hotelgasten die hier verblijven. Dus we hebben een Mok!
After breakfast we fetched out things and quickly checked the locations of certain shops on the Internet.
We first went to Belz. We arrived there shortly after nine, but they only opened at 10:00, so tough luck. Thus we decided to first go to the OfficeDepot and then Michaels (crafts and DIY store). I wanted to check out a PDA (Palm Tungsten T3) and had a play with it!
So many crafts and DIY things in a single store was something Miriam never saw before. She got really excited. Embroidery stuff is something you won't really find in the stores here yet. Scrapbooking is THE hype at the moment. (Read: Pasting pictures in a nice, cozy way). It's incredible what is available for that. Miriam bought a very nice toolset for putting in Eyelets (small rings and rivets in all forms, sizes and colors). At home very limited in availability and here presented in wide displays!
For Samantha's magic wand Miriam got a very cheap glue-gun, ideal for during the vacation! And also some ribbon. That should be sufficient to make it work!Na het ontbijt onze spulletjes gepakt en op internet nog even uitgezocht waar bepaalde winkels te vinden zijn.
We zijn eerst naar Belz gegaan. We waren er al om even over negen, maar alles ging pas om 10:00 uur open, helaas. Dus besloten we om eerste naar de Office Depot te gaan en daarna naar Micheals (hobbywinkel) te gaan. Cesco wilde kijken naar een handheld computer en zat zichzelf echt te verlekkeren!
Zo enorm veel hobbyspullen in een winkel heb ik echt nog nooit gezien. Het was echt om te smullen. Borduurspullen vind je hier tot op heden nog niet echt in de winkels. Wat hier echt een hele grote rage is, is scrapbooking. (Lees foto’s op een gezellige manier inplakken). Wat ze daar allemaal wel niet voor verkopen. Ik heb trouwens een enorm mooi gereedschapsetje gekocht voor Eyelets (kleine nesteltjes en dopjes in allerlei vormen en kleuren). In Nederland mondjesmaat te verkrijgen en hier breed gepresenteerd!
Voor de toverstaf van Samantha een zeer goedkoop lijmpistool gehaald, ideaal voor vakantie! En wat lint. Nou dat moet nu wel gaan lukken hoor!
I have been reading a book-series (Wheel of Time) for a long time, and as far as I could tell, the paperback of the latest should be available. At least in the UK it was! Here in the USA the release is not until December. So the UK is too early again...Cesco leest al een hele tijd een bepaalde boekenserie (Wheel of Time) en volgens de laatste informatie is er een nieuwe uit. Tenminste in Engeland wel! Hier in Amerika is de release datum pas in december. Dus Engeland is weer eens te vroeg…
By now the stores at Belz had opened. Unfortunately for Miriam, well more for our wallets, they did not have any other units of this model watch. So we'll have to purchase it at the parks for normal price. What a bummer! Purchased a wand for Samantha. Miriam will have to do some modifications. However for $ 5,00 that should not be too much of a risk. In the parks they do not sell them separately and you are being forced to buy it in combination with gloves and a handbag. Very nice of course, but to pay $ 25,00 for that (excluding sales tax) is a bit too much! Yesterday we already purchased the jewels to glue on. It'll all come together. Also purchased some cheap pins just for trading (some pins are $ 4,00 less!). To us they aren't nice enough for on the lanyard, but they do make good trading material!
At the Subway we had a quick bite, and it tasted great.
On the same road there is also a big Walmart. We wanted to have a look there as well. We're still trying to find Samantha a Cinderella dress. We did find dresses for Ariel, Aurora, Belle and Snowwhite, but no Cinderella. However these dresses are $ 20,00 and those in the parks are $ 55,00. So I think it's clear why we take the effort... Unfortunately they do not have it here either. We are starting to fear we'll have to buy the dress in one of the parks. We more or less promised Samantha we'd buy her such a dress. And she just loved dressing up.Inmiddels waren de winkeltjes in Belz open. Pecht voor mij, nouja meer voor mijn portomonee, hadden ze dit horloge niet meer. Dus zal ik hem op het park voor de normale prijs moeten kopen. Best balen hoor! Voor Samantha de toverstaf gekocht. Ik moet er wel even iets aan knutselen. Maar voor nog geen $5,- wil ik me daar best aan wagen. Op het park verkopen ze die dingen niet los en wordt je verplicht om er handschoenen en een tasje bij te kopen. Harstikke leuk natuurlijk, maar om er zo’n dikke $25,- voor neer te tellen vind ik wel een beetje te gek. We hebben gisteren al wat kroonjuwelen gekocht om deze op de staf te kunnen lijmen. Komt allemaal wel goed. Ook wat goedkope pinnetjes gekocht om te kunnen ruilen (hier scheelt het zo’n $4,- per pin!). Ze zijn niet leuk genoeg om op een pinkoord te hebben, maar wel een goed ruilmiddel!
Bij de Subway hebben we even lekker iets gegeten, heerlijk was het.
Op de zelfde weg waar we ons bevonden zat ook een grote Walmart. Hier wilde we graag eventjes kijken. We zoeken nog steeds voor Sammy naar een assepoesterjurk. We hebben bij de Walmart wel jurken gezien van Ariel, Doornroosje, Belle en Sneeuwwitje maar geen Assepoester. Maar deze jurken kosten $20,- en de jurken uit het park $55,- Dus misschien wel duidelijk waarom we zoveel moeite doen… Maar helaas hadden ze hem hier niet. Ik vrees dat we toch de jurk in een van de parken moeten gaan kopen. We hebben het Samantha toch min of meer beloofd dat we zo’n jurk voor haar mee zouden nemen. En ze is gek op verkleden.
We have also bought socks for Geordi and Cesco. Yes, you're on vacation and still doing normal purchases. Buying sock in the Netherlands is a disaster. Especially for kids socks you pay a fortune and end up with near to nothing. And now we have real sport-socks for the little guy! I too needed new socks! And we were also able to find him a pair of cute 'dressed' shoes. Don't laugh, but they're McDonalds shoes (McKids)! Not that it's written all over them! They're just neat black shoes. Just like the ones you'd find for adults.We hebben ook sokken voor Geordi en Cesco meegenomen. Jajaja ben je op vakantie doe je nog noodzakelijke boodschappen. Sokken kopen is in Nederland, vind ik, een grote ramp. Je betaald je voor die kindersokken scheel en hebt dan nog niets. Ik heb nu voor die knul echte sportsokken! En Cesco was ook wel aan nieuwe sokken toe! En we hebben hele schattige nette schoentjes voor hem gekocht. Niet lachen, het zijn Mc Donald schoenen! Staat er niet met koeienletters op hoor! Het zijn hele nette zwarte schoenen. Zoals je in Nederland koopt voor volwassen heren.
Once we were done at Walmart we left for the Florida Mall. This is a pretty big mall with a lot of nice stores, including a Disney Store. In the Disney Catalogue there was a soft Tinkerbell playdoll. We very much wanted to buy that for Samantha, but the thing is just not to be had. We found Snowwhite, Belle and Aurora, but unfortunately no Tink.
In this mall there is another great store: Build-a-Bear-Workshop (www.buildabear.com). You select a bear or other animal (they are not yet stuffed) and you can then, if you want, add clothes and accessories. I have been in a California location before while I was there for work, and hesitated about buying one for Geordi and Samantha then. Fact is, they're pretty expensive. And even then I preferred doing this together for the kids, not knowing at the time we'd be doing that the very same year.
We chose the same bear for both. Ok, so now we have an unstuffed bear. To keep them apart we added a sound to each. A magical chime for Sam and the Teddybear Picknick in Geordi's.
Then you proceed to the stuffing station. There the bear is stuffed with a fluffy material. Miriam filled Samantha's bear (well, filled... She pressed the valve-pedal! The rest was done by a store employee) en I did Geordi's.
Before the bear's back is closed you can chose a heart from a container. You warm up the heart and make a wish and then the heart goes in to the bear. Together with a barcode which uniquely identified the bear. Should it ever be lost, that barcode will help return it to the rightful owner. So now the bear is ready, and it is time to select nice clothes. And sufficient material to chose from! For Samantha's we chose a ballet/elf-dress (complete with bow for over he ear!) and angels-wings (so cute!). For Geordi's we chose fisherman's clothes (complete with fishing rod) and a big backpack. It really is a men's bear now. OK, so now the bears are dressed. Time to go to the computers and name them. You swipe the barcode through a reader, and all the basic data is in the computer. We had to think up names for the bears. Samantha's cute bear we named Fluffy and Geordi's macho bear is Gruffy. We got a complete birth certificate for each bear. We got the bears in bog boxes. The boxes are like small houses, and on the side they read: I’m going home. Almost enough to bring a tear to your eyes.
Today was the day we got lucky on a lot of things. We had been searching for shoes with lights for a while (the ones that blink when you walk) for the kids. Here to goes: almost impossible back home. We walked by a shoe shop and saw Tinkerbell sneakers. And yet: with lights. Of course we checked them out immediately. Unbelievable but true: they had Samantha's size. For Geordi they had manly Lion-king shoes. And the price certainly was not a barrier. Back home you would not even get normal shoes for that price! Really unbelievable. So the young lady and master now both have shoes with lights.Toen we klaar waren bij de Walmart zijn we naar de Florida Mall gegaan. Dit is een behoorlijk groot winkelcentrum en er waren zeer leuke winkeltjes, waaronder ook een Disney Store. In de Disney Catalogus stond een TinkerBell knuffel pop. Die wilde we voor Samantha heel graag meenemen, maar dat ding is gewoon nergens te verkrijgen helaas. Wel van Sneeuwwitje, Belle en Doornroosje. Maar geen Tink, helaas.
In deze Mall zat ook een ontzettend leuke winkel: Build-a-Bear-Workshop (www.buildabear.com). Je kiest een beer of ander dier uit (deze zijn nog niet met vulling gevuld) en daar zoek je, als je dat wilt, kleertjes bij uit. Cesco is, toen hij voor zijn werk in Callifornia zat, ook bij zo’n zelfde soort winkel geweest. Heeft toen getwijfeld of hij zo’n bear zou laten maken voor Samantha en Geordi. Maar eerlijk is eerlijk, ze zijn best duur. En hij vond het toen al leuker om samen een bear te maken voor de kinderen, niet wetende dat we in hetzelfde jaar al samen in Amerika zouden zijn.
We kozen voor alletwee een zelfde beer uit. Goed je hebt dus een ongevulde beer. Om ze uit elkaar te kunnen houden hebben we in alletwee een geluid gestopt. In die van Sam een soort tover twingeltje en in de beer van Geordi Teddybear picknik.
Dan ga je met de beer naar de vulmachine. Daar wordt de beer van zachte vulling voorzien. Ik heb de beer van Samantha gevult (nouja pedaal ingetrapt! De rest deed de winkelmevrouw) En Cesco Geordi zijn beer.
Voordat de rug van de beer wordt dichtgenaaid kies je uit een grote bak nog een hartje uit. Met het hartje in je hand doe je een wens en vervolgens gaat dit hartje in de beer. Samen met een strookje waarop de streepjescode van de beer staat. Zo kan de beer, als hij geregistreert is, bij verlies altijd weer bij de juiste eigenaar bezorgd worden.
Goed de beer is klaar. Nu is het tijd om leuke kleertje uit te kiezen voor de beer. En keuze in overvloed. Voor Samantha hebben we gekozen voor een ballerina, elfjes achtig jurkje (met strikje voor het oor!) en engelvleugeltjes (lief geworden!). Voor Geordi hebben we visserskleertjes (compleet met hengel) en een grote rugzak uitgekozen. Het is echt een stoere beer geworden. Oké de beren zijn aangekleed. Tijd om ze bij de computers een naam te gaan geven. Je haalt de streepjes code door een speciaal apparaat heen, dan staan gelijk alle gegevens van de beer in de computer. Voor de beer moesten we een naam verzinnen. Samantha’s lieve beer heet Fluffy en Geordi zijn stoere beer heet Gruffy. We kregen een heel geboortecertificaat bij de beer. In een grote draagbox kregen we de beren mee. Op de doos, die er uit ziet als een huisje, staat geschreven: I’m going home. Om er bijna tranen van in je ogen te krijgen.
Vandaag was de dag waar we voor veel dingen slaagde. We waren al eerder opzoek naar leuke (gym)schoenen met lichtjes (als je loopt gaan de lichtjes knipperen) voor de kinderen. Ook hiervoor weer, thuis vrijwel niet te koop. We liepen langs een schoenenwinkel en zagen buiten TinkerBell gymschoenen staan. En ja met lichtjes. Natuurlijk gelijk kijken. Gelukkig hadden ze de schoenen ook nog in Samantha haar maat. Voor Geordi hadden ze stoere LionKing schoenen. En voor de prijs hoefde we het echt niet te laten. Daar koop je bij ons nog niet eens normale schoenen voor! Echt ongelooflijk. Dus meneer en mevrouw hebben nu alletwee lichtjes schoenen.
I love gadget-shops. The ones where they sell useful and useless gadgets and tools. Miriam sat down in one of those automatic massage chairs whilst I browsed the store. She rather enjoyed the massage. By now it was lunchtime. The mall has, which is quite common in malls here, a foodcourt with lots of tables in the center and different food stalls around it. So everyone can take their pick and still have lunch together. I wanted a pizza slice and Miriam preferred Taco Bell. A taco with a kind of nacho salad and a very laaaaarge jug (cannot call it a class
Inmiddels wel tijd om wat te gaan eten. Je hebt hier, dat zie je wel meer in winkelcentrums, een grote ruimte met tafels en stoelen en daaromheen allemaal eettentjes. Dus ieder kan uitkiezen waar hij/zijn zin in heeft en toch gezamelijk eten. Cesco wilde en slice pizza en mijn voorkeur ging naar Taco Bell. Een taco met een soort nachosalade met een heeeeeeeeele grote tank (je kon het geen beker meer noemen) cola! Eigenlijk veel te groot, maar het zat nu eenmaal bij het menu.
Once we were done shopping, we walked back to the car. We were planning on returning to the hotel when we saw a superTarget (warehouse chain). Should we? Yes, we went there to quickly browse the store. And it's good we did, because what did we find: Indeed a Cinderella dress for Samantha for a much friendlier price! So our efforts paid off. And to be honest, we like this one better than the one in the park. So we really succeeded very well today.Toen we uitgewinkeld waren, zijn we naar de auto gelopen. We wilde terug gaan naar het hotel toen we nog een grote Target (supermarktketen) zagen. Zullen we? Ja dus we zijn nog even daar gaan snuffelen. Maar goed ook, want wat verkochten ze daar: inderdaad de Assepoesterjurk voor Samantha voor een veel vriendelijkere prijs! Dus onze moeite is beloont. En eigenlijk vinden we deze jurk nog leuker dan die in het park te verkrijgen zijn. We zijn vandaag dus echt voor alles goed geslaagd.
We returned to the hotel, where Miriam finished yesterday's report. That way I could do the translation and post it on the web. I made good progress and added another 2 days...We zijn terug gegaan naar het hotel. Waar ik het verslag van de dag ervoor af heb gemaakt. Zo kon Cesco de vertaling maken en deze op het web zetten. Hij is aardig opgeschoten en heeft er weer 2 dagen bij…
