Today we did something else than Disney: We’re going to the Universal Studio’s. Here you can find, amongst others, Back to the Future and Terminator 3D.Vandaag eens iets anders dan Disney: We gaan vandaag naar de Universal Studio’s. Hier vind je onder andere Back to the Future en Terminator 3D.

First off we got some food for breakfast in the hotel. We didn’t feel like a buffet today, but wanted a simple breakfast. A cookie and donut taste great for breakfast as well!We hebben in het hotel als ontbijt eerst iets te eten gehaald. We hadden even geen zin in een buffet, maar gewoon in iets gemakkelijks. Een cooky en donut smaakt ook heel prima als ontbijt!
After returning to search for my sunglasses - Miriam says men cannot search, but she was the last one to hold it in her hands - we went on our way.Na even naar Cesco’s zonnebril gezocht te hebben, mannen kunnen gewoon niet zoeken, zijn we op weg gegaan.

One of the major differences between the studios in Orlando and Los Angeles is that all soundstages you see in Orlando are fakes and not in active use for movies. That in itself is a bummer, as the presence of real working soundstages does give a special mood to the place.Een van de grootste verschillen tussen de studio’s in Orlando en Los Angeles is dat alle studio’s in Orlando nep zijn en ook niet voor opnames gebruikt worden. Dat is op zich best jammer, het geeft een apart sfeertje.

In the parking lot we could, after quickly separating from $8, park our car in KingKong 111. It truly was an expedition to get to the park. We were parked quite a long way from the entrances. But luckily there are transporters (moving sidewalks ), so the walking part was ok.In een parkeergarage konden we, na even $8,- neergeteld te hebben onze auto parkeren. Het was echt een mijl op zeven om bij het park te komen. We stonden vrij ver weg geparkeerd. Maar je kon gebruik maken van rolbanen, dus het viel mee.
We walked along the Citywalk to get to the park’s entrance. At the ticket machines we first changed our Internet order in to real passes. After counter-signing at the gates, we were allowed in to the park. Initially there was some doubt on whether we were allowed to bring our bottles of soda in to the park. You see, everywhere there are signs posted telling you drinks from outside are not allowed, but there was no problem bringing them in. It would have surprised us, to be honest.Over The Citywalk liepen we naar het park toe. Eerst bij de automaat onze Internet boeking omzetten in echte kaartjes. Na een handtekening gezet te hebben, konden we het park in. Even was de vraag of we onze flesjes drinken wel mee mochten nemen het park in. Er stond namelijk overal aangeplakt dat dit niet mocht, maar het bleek geen enkel probleem te zijn. We hadden het ook best raar gevonden hoor.

After getting ourselves a guidemap and showtimes guide we went on our merry way. First to Shrek in 4D. It was truly very nice. During the film you are splashed and blown on, and the greatest fun is that the seats also actively respond to the movie by moving appropriately.Nadat we onszelf voorzien hebben van een kaart en openingstijdenlijst zijn we op weg gegaan. Eerst naar Shrek in 4D. Dit was echt ontzettend leuk. Je werd tijdens de film natgespetterd en wat het allerleukste nog wel was, was dat de stoelen ook actief meededen in de film.
When we exited the theatre, Shrek and his (human) Fiona were already waiting for pictures and autographs. Personally we weren’t very interested in that.Toen we buiten kwamen stond Shrek samen met zijn Fiona al te wachten om met mensen op de foto te gaan. Dat vonden wij persoonlijk nu niet zo nodig.
We just basically started roaming the park with the idea that we’d just see what we would run in to. That would be ET. With the bike you bring, across all kinds of hurdles, ET back to his homeplanet. And when you leave… He tell you goodbye (Bye Miriam, Bye Francesco).We zijn eigenlijk gewoon maar door het park gaan lopen en hadden zo iets van we zien wel wat op ons pad komt. Dat werd ET. Met de fiets breng je, langs allerlei hindernissen, ET naar huis. En als afscheid…zegt hij je gedag (Bye Miriam, Bye Francesco).
We were in one extremity of the park, and thus had to backtrack to get to the rest. When we did we passed the theatre for Animal Planet, Live!. The show would start in a few, so we merrily joined in. But to be honest, the show was pretty tame and was very similar, as far as the bird part goes, to the Birds of Prey show at Animal Kingdom. However there were also dogs and monkeys (no, not the audience!).We zaten in het doodlopende stuk van het park en moesten weer terug lopen. Zo kwamen we langs het theater van Animal Planet, Live!. De show ging bijna beginnen dus we zijn gezellig aangeschoven. Om eerlijk te zijn, de show was een beetje flauw en leek, met de vogels, erg veel op de roofvogelshow in Animal Kingdom. Er kwamen honden aan bod en er waren apen (nee niet het publiek!).
After the show we went to Back to the Future. This is a simulator ride through time with the same DeLorean you see in the movies. It is one of the better simulator ride we know.Na deze show zijn we naar Back to the Future gegaan. Dit is een simulatierit door de tijd met de DeLorean die in de film ook gebruikt wordt. Is een van de beste simulatie vluchten die ik ken.
Men in Black we skipped. During the ride you have to zap aliens in a kind of arcade game. Neither Miriam nor myself felt like that.Men in Black hebben we overgeslagen. Daar moet je tijdens je rit een soort computerspelletje spelen. Zowel Cesco als ik hadden daar weinig zin in.
What we really noticed today, and Miriam initially thought it was her imagination, is that the park is rotting away. For those who know the Netherlands: the maintenance levels resemble those of het Land van Ooit! Quite an amount of rides were gone or under refurbishment. And there were very few people in the park. Being low season will be partially causing this. But compared to Disney this place was dead. Well, maybe it’s busier at Islands of Adventure!Wat ons opviel vandaag, en ik dacht even dat het aan mij lag, was dat het park een beetje aan het verpauperen is. Het gaat een beetje qua onderhoud op het Land van Ooit in Nederland lijken! Er waren best behoorlijk wat attracties weg of in onderhoud. Het was ook absoluut niet druk in het park. Nu komt dat gedeeltelijk ook omdat het laagseizoen is. Maar vergelijkend met Disney was dit enorm rustig. Wellicht is het drukker op Island of Adventure!
BeetleJuice’s Rock’n’Roll show had just started, but we could still find a seat. This was a real fun show. Together with the Bride of Frankenstein, the Frankenstein Monster, count Dracula and the Wolfman (all jazzed up) they sang a lot of well-known songs.De show van BeetleJuice was net begonnen, maar we konden nog aanschuiven. Dit was enorm leuk. Samen met the Bride of Frankenstein, Frankenstein zelf en graaf dracula (allemaal in modern jasje) werden er veel liedjes gezongen.

Then we visited Earthquake. It starts with a pre-show with some explanations on (and corny gags with) special effects and subsequently you get in to the subway train. After arriving in the next subway station an earthquake occurs, collapsing the entire structure. It may be dated, but it is still a fun ride.We zijn ook in Earthquake geweest. Eerst een pre-show met wat uitleg over (en flauwe grapjes met) special effects en vervolgens ga je met de metro op pad. Na aankomst in een metro-station komt er een aardbeving waarbij de hele boel instort. Hoe dan ook, het blijft een enorm leuke attractie.

By now it was becoming time to get something to eat. We went to Mel’s Diner (the place from Happy Days). And after that we were again good to go! We went to Twister. The movie is about two scientific researchers. They investigate the birth of tornados. This movie uses a lot of special effects. The ride gives you a rough idea of what the actors had to live through during the taping of this movie.Zo langzamerhand werd het tijd om iets te gaan eten. We zijn bij Mel’s Diner gaan eten (bekent uit Happy Days). En daarna konden we er weer tegenaan! We zijn naar Twister gegaan. De film gaat over twee wetenschappelijk onderzoekers. Zij doen onderzoek naar het onstaan van tornado’s. In deze film worden veel special effects gebruikt. Deze attractie gaf je een idee wat de acteurs hebben doorstaan voor het opnemen van deze film.
From a previous visit we knew that the front is not a good place to be. So we made sure we were in the back row. It was impressive, and you literally had to hold on to your hat. The power of a tornado is unbelievable. And this is only a mild simulation!Van een voorgaande keer wist ik nog dat je beter niet vooraan kon gaan staan. Dus zijn we achteraan gaan staan. Het was indrukwekkend en je pet vasthouden was niet echt overbodig. Wat een kracht kan er in een tornado zitten. En dan was dit nog maar erg mild!

By now the Ghostbusters show started. Here too BeetleJuice was involved. Personally we found it rather corny. Immediately after that, in a different location, the Blues Brothers started their show. It was nice, but we missed the greatest hit: Everybody needs somebody.Ondertussen was de Ghostbusters show begonnen. Hier speelde BeetleJuice ook een rol. Persoonlijk vond ik de show wat flauw. Aansluitend op een andere lokatie begon de Blues Brothershow. Was aardig, miste echter de grootste hit: Everybody needs somebody.

We went to Terminator 3D. When we were here last, some 7 years ago, this ride just opened. The lady that hosted the show back then was about a size 5, but now we had a lady that was clearly a few sizes larger! Miriam said to me: Well she has grown quite a bit over the years!We zijn nog naar Terminator 3D geweest. Deze was net geopend toen we hier een jaartje of zeven terug waren. De dame die toen de show presenteerde had zeg maar maatje 36, nu verscheen er een griet die duidelijk een aantal maten groter was! Ik zei ook tegen Cesco, nou die is in de loop van de jaren aardig gegroeid!
Terminator is a combination of 3D movie and live actors and happened in the Cyberdyne presentation lounge. Very loud sounds, so Miriam put her fingers in her ears! LOLTerminator is een combinatie van 3D en live show en speelt zich af in de presentatie ruimte van Cyberdyne. Geluid is erg hard, dus heb mijn vingers maar in mijn oren gestopt! Hihi

By now we were done with the park. It was really just too late to go to Islands of Adventure. So we’ll prolly be going there later this week. We strolled Citywalk for a bit, but that did not appeal to us either.Eigenlijk hadden we nu het park wel gehad. Het was net te laat om nog even naar Islands of Adventure te gaan. Dus daar gaan we van de week nog wel naar toe. We zijn nog een stuk over The Citywalk gelopen, maar daar was voor ons ook weinig te vinden.

We chose to simply get back to the car and then the hotel. Back in the hotel we first quickly filled our mugs!We kozen ervoor om gewoon terug naar de auto te gaan en naar het hotel te gaan. Bij aankomst bij het hotel eerst nog even onze mokken gevuld!

I used the free time to do some translating and Miriam relaxed with a glossy.Cesco heeft de tijd benut om verder te gaan met de vertaling van de verslagen en ik heb even lekker een boekje zitten lezen.

We were planning on having dinner at the Las Vegas Buffet. As we remember it, it was a very good buffet restaurant. Nowadays it unfortunately is much less so. Food was moderate, we are used to much and much better, and the restaurant itself had lost color, which you unfortunately cannot see from the outside.We wilden bij Las Vegas Buffet iets gaan eten. In onze herinneringen was dit echt een ontzettend goed buffet restaurant. Tegenwoordig is het helaas een heel stuk minder. Het eten was matig, we waren veel en veel beter gewend, en het restaurant was in de loop van de jaren grauw geworden, maar dat zie je niet aan de buitenkant.
After dinner we went out for some shopping at the Publix and Walmart. In the latter Miriam was able to get 2 yards of lovely cloth!Na het eten zijn we nog even wat boodschapjes wezen doen bij Publix en WallMart. En bij die laatste heb ik 2 ontzettend lieve stofjes gekocht!

We were both tired and retired to our hotel. To get to bed early for once.We waren alletwee moe en zijn lekker terug gegaan naar het hotel. Om eens bijtijds ons bedje in te stappen.
